Trinity vs. Sunset League Showcase

Ralph K. Reed Gymnasium at Newport Harbor High School hosted the Trinity vs. Sunset League Showcase featuring the reigning CIF-SS D1 Champions, Mater Dei, CIF-SS D2 Champions, Orange Lutheran-- both from the Trinity League against Sunset League powerhouses Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos. The action did not disappoint and in the end the results only proved that Orange County has some of the best teams in the nation.

Match 1: Orange Lutheran vs. Los Alamitos

Behind the heavy and consistent arm of Abby Kardich of Los Alamitos the Lancers of Orange Lutheran could not contain exciting Outside-Hitter in the least. Even out-of-system, Kardich was consistent in scoring points with a diverse arsenal of attacks. The Griffins took down the Lancers 3-1, 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13.

Match 2: Santa Margarita vs. Newport Harbor

The eagles were led by an unsuspecting group of players: Sophomore Outside Hitter McKenna Thomas (Pepperdine Beach commit) and Junior Libero, Taryn Whittingham. The Showcase host Newport Harbor showed moments of brilliance but in the end the Eagles are deep and the Sailors had no answer in SMCHS' 3-0 sweep, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22.

USA Women’s National Team Red vs. Blue Scrimmage

Karsta Lowe Returns

Last night at Irvine Valley College, the USA Volleyball Women’s National Team held a Red vs. Blue Scrimmage as part of an evaluation scrimmage to assist in determining the American roster for the Pan-Am Cup. There were some big college standouts competing for a spot on the USA roster which I’ll discuss later– but the the largest news of the night was the return of 2016 Rio Olympics Bronze Medalist, Karsta Lowe, who retired shortly after the Rio Olympics (View the Karsta Lowe Interview).

The Balanced Scrimmage

The format for the Red vs. Blue was an exhibition 4-set match, rally score to 25. As the night would end, the Red and Blue squads finished splitting the 4-sets with the Red Squad taking the 1st and 3rd sets, 25-22 and 25-19, while the Blue Squad took the 2nd and 4th sets 25-11 and 25-19 respectively. Key performers without any specific statistics attached are as follows:

  • Lauren Carlini, Setter (6-2, Aurora, IL | Wisconsin) – Lauren ran an effective offense throwing out very hittable balls on offense, while blocking a few on defense as well.
  • Simone Lee, Outside Hitter (6-1, Menomonee, WI | Penn St.) – Simone was set frequently early since both squads had difficulty passing the ball. This resulted in a lot of bail-out sets to the left pin– which were put away consistently by Simone.
  • Karsta Lowe, Opposite Hitter (6-4, Rancho Santa Fe, CA | UCLA) – although some of her sets did not have the greatest location she was able to terminate effectively, while putting up a few blocks.
  • Adora Anae, Outside Hitter (6-1, Punaluu, HI | Utah) – Adora was set early and often and has a whip of an arm.
  • Haleigh Washington, Middle (6-3, Colorado Springs, CO | Penn St.) – got a lot of touches on attacks and had great lateral movement to her pin-blockers.
  • Annie Mitchem, Outside Hitter (6-3, Friendswood, TX | Hawaii) – was a pleasant surprise of an outside attacker. Annie had a great ability to terminate the ball.
  • Aiyana Whitney, Opposite Hitter (6-4, Norwood, NJ | Penn St.) – this right-hander is a great jumper with a lot of power. Hard to imagine her NOT on the roster.
  • Chiaka Ogbogu, Middle (6-2, Coppell, TX | Texas) – performed great all night offensively and defensively. Incredibly athletic and challenged a lot of balls at the net defensively while being powerful on offense.
  • Amanda Benson, Libero (5-7, Litchfield Park, AZ | Oregon) – consistent on serve-receive while grinding out digs all evening.

It’s not to say that the remaining players did not play well because there were some great rallies during the evening involving Molly McCage (MH, 6-3, Texas Spring, TX | Texas), Paige Tapp (MH, 6-1, Stewartsville, MN | Minnesota), Kadie Rolfzen (OH, 6-3, Papillion, NE | Nebraska) and Krystal Rivers (Opp, 5-11, Birmingham, AL | Alabama).

Essentially, Head Coach Jon Newman-Gonchar and his staff are going have a challenging time selecting players for the 14-person roster with as much talent that is in the USA gym.

*NOTE: Inactive players for the night:

  • Inky Ajanaku (MB, 6-3, Tulsa, OK | Stanford)
  • Brittany Abercrombie (Opp, 6-2, Carlsbad, CA | USC)
  • Carly Wopat (MB, 6-2, Santa Barbara, CA | Stanford)
  • Hannah Tapp (MB, 6-3, Stewartville, MN | Minnesota)
  • Sarah Wilhite-Parsons (OH, 6-2, Eden Prairie, MN | Minnesota)

Volleyball Nations League, Week 4: Chicago, Illinois

USA Flexes It’s Muscles

Stage 4 of FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) saw the USA sweep through the weekend with 3 straight-set victories against #8 Serbia, #3 Poland and #11 Iran. After the weekend’s result USA moved into 2nd place in the VNL standings behind France.

The USA used a variety of lineups that were all extremely effective offensively. In previous weeks of VNL the USA started out slowly going 5 sets in weeks 1 and 2, and losing 0-3 in week 3 to Germany. That wasn’t the case for week 4. Unfortunately the only negative of the weekend was the loss of Wing Spiker, Thomas Jaeschke, who went down with a knee injury in Saturday’s match vs. Poland. Coach Speraw inserted TJ DeFalco, a Senior at Long Beach St. University, who performed well in Jaeschke’s absence.

Shell-Shocked

On night one (Friday, June 15th), #11 Iran pulled off a straight-set upset of #3 Poland. Wing-Spiker Milad Ebadipour led the way for the Iranians with 13 points along wit Middle Ali Shafiei who also chipped in 13 points. Saeid Marouf orchestrated the Iranian offense effectively running an efficient offense in the upset. Poland was led by Damian Shulz’s 12 points.

Louder Than the Pols

The biggest surprise of the weekend was how passionate and loud the Iranian volleyball fans were all weekend. They came out in force for Sunday’s match. In an attendance of 3,000, I would have to estimate that 2,000 of them were Iran fans. Usually in Chicago, the Polish fans would be the loudest in Sears Centre– that wasn’t the case for this last weekend.

Volleyball Nations League: Week 4 Preview

In FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) on the men’s side we’ve got 2 more weeks of Pool Play competition. It is a a tight race with Poland and Brazil leading the way with 23 point race with Poland narrowly leading due to Sets and Points Ratios. In third place you’ve got a HOT French team who is capable of upsetting any team with 22 points. In fourth place is the USA with 20 points. In striking distance in making the Final Six are Italy and Canada. Serbia needs come out of this coming weekend to hold on to that sixth spot.

Team USA was shocked by German last weekend in Ottawa, Canada– as with LOTS of volleyball fans, but the Germans were “grippin’ and rippin'” from the service line creating so many out-of-system plays for the Americans. Even Head Coach John Speraw is quoted as saying, “This is the worst performance I’ve seen of my team in the last 5-6 years.” The USA bounced back with 2 solid wins against Australia and host, Canada to recover the weekend.

This weekend at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, a suburb of Chicago, the USA is looking to rebound with matches against Serbia, Poland and Iran. One would think it would be a series of home matches for the USA– unfortunately, with a large Polish and Serb population in the area there will only be one “home” match for Team USA– vs. Iran– on Sunday. I’ll be MC/Host for the SIX matches that will be streamed live in the USA on FloVolleyball.TV (or you can go to the FIVB VNL site for the international broadcasts).

I’m excited to be out in Chicago again– that’s for sure! Portillo’s here I come!
